This limited release of Vago Barril en Barro comes from the legendary Tío Rey (Emigdio Jarquín Ramírez) and was produced exclusively for California in fall 2019. While labeled “Barril,” this agave is actually cultivated Madre Cuixe, grown and harvested near Tío Rey’s palenque in Gulerá, Sola de Vega. The entire production, from hand-harvested piñas to fermentation and distillation, reflects the deep traditions of this mezcalero’s ancestral methods.
Cooked underground for four days, milled entirely by hand, and distilled in handmade 45-liter clay pot stills, this batch of just 245 liters offers a nuanced, earthy, and wild profile. Expect expressive notes of baked agave, light smoke, clay minerality, and dried herbs, with a beautifully dry, lingering finish.
A stunning example of small-batch, clay-distilled mezcal that’s a must-try for fans of Vago, Tío Rey, or wild Karwinskii expressions.
